PAUL JOSEPH / ESG & SUSTAINABILITY ANALYST

Building a world
worth reporting on.

Hey, I am Paul Joseph, an ESG and sustainability professional based in Dubai. I bring a background in research and quality operations to carbon accounting, governance, and sustainability reporting.

A slightly unconventional route into sustainability.

TL;DR

Grew up in Dubai, studied Microbiology in India (BSc Amrita, MSc (Hons) LPU). Spent a year+ in Sterile QA at a pharma plant - EU/EAEU GMP, ISO Class 5 operations, audits, deviations, that whole world.

That's what pulled me into ESG: tired of "we care about sustainability" without any numbers behind it.

PSPO I™ and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified, currently doing an MBA in International Business Management.

UAE resident, open to ESG roles.

I grew up in Dubai, then left for India to study Microbiology - earning my BSc at Amrita, followed by an MSc (Hons) at LPU.

After that, I spent over a year inside a sterile pharmaceutical plant as a Sterile QA professional, working with EU/EAEU GMP, ISO Class 5 cleanrooms, deviations, audits, documentation, and the wonderfully exciting world of things going wrong and figuring out why.

Somewhere along the way, I started looking at the bigger picture: resources are not infinite, and saying "we care about sustainability" is becoming a lot harder without the data to prove it. That is what pulled me into ESG.

Now, I am interested in helping companies turn their impact into something measurable, reportable, and hopefully useful.

I am also a Scrum-certified Product Owner (PSPO I™) and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified, because apparently I enjoy improving processes almost as much as I enjoy questioning them.

Outside of work, you will usually find me hitting the gym or playing football - a good workout keeps me focused and grounded.

CARBON ACCOUNTING FOR SMEs

Making everyday
carbon data useful.

Running a small business is already a full-time job. Figuring out its emissions should not be a second one.

That is why I am building Carbone, a carbon accounting app for UAE SMEs with a real-time emission calculation engine that tracks and logs data at the transaction level, so you do not have to go through hundreds of bills at the end of the month. I am starting with restaurants and cafeterias, since they are among the highest emitters in the sector.

Project details

The problem is timing more than anything. Data lands at month end, and so does whatever insight you were supposed to get from it. Carbone brings activity logging, Scope 1, Scope 2, and select Scope 3 calculations into one place, so owners can see where their emissions actually come from and what to do next.

Carbone is still an evolving MVP, so things change every single day. Receipt photo capture and AI extraction are on the product roadmap, once the core engine stops needing daily attention.

Fingers crossed.

ESG CONSULTING / SIMULATED

Turning ESG challenges
into a practical plan.

Meet Qamar, a fictional UAE-headquartered pharmaceutical group serving six GCC markets. Business is growing, but so are its emissions. Behind the scenes: gaps in ESG data, cold-chain failures, antibiotic wastewater concerns and worker-protection risks.

With a major hospital tender and debt renewal approaching, Qamar needs more than a polished report. It needs a credible baseline, clear priorities and an improvement plan that fits its budget.

My approach and current progress

I’m working through the case data to define the reporting boundary, assess material topics, calculate emissions and challenge unsupported claims. I’m developing the sustainability report and improvement programme around wastewater, worker protection, cooling, supply continuity and data controls.

The case allows AED 8 million upfront and AED 1.2 million in annual recurring costs. A working seven-project proposal totals AED 7.88 million upfront and remains under review. Patient and worker protection remain priorities even when a project does not pay for itself.

Naringenin and derivatives.
Molecular docking research.

MOLECULAR DOCKING / LOVELY PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY

Exploring molecular
binding potential.

Could a plant-derived compound offer a useful starting point for breast-cancer research? My MSc research explored how naringenin and four O-alkyl derivatives might bind to estrogen receptor alpha.

Using molecular docking and SwissADME, I compared predicted binding behaviour and drug-like properties. The findings help identify candidates for further investigation; they do not establish treatment efficacy.

Inside the publication

Breast cancer remains the second-most significant cause of female mortality worldwide. The emergence of naturally occurring plant-derived compounds called phytoestrogens has aroused substantial interest in their potential to mitigate breast cancer. Phytoestrogens demonstrate structural similarities to human estrogen and can therefore interact with the estrogen receptors.

Naringenin, an important flavonoid and phytoestrogen, has gathered significant attention in the field of cancer due to its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties while its O-alkyl derivatives can enhance its bioavailability and target specificity. In this study, we have screened Naringenin and four of its O-alkyl derivatives, namely Methylnaringenin, Isosakuranetin, Sakuranetin and 5-O 4',7-Di-O methylnaringenin for their binding affinity with estrogen receptor-α (PDB ID: 6VJD). Molecular docking studies targeting estrogen receptor-α (PDB ID: 6VJD) revealed favorable binding energies and interaction patterns for naringenin and its derivatives, suggesting potential as therapeutic agents against breast cancer.

Additionally, analysis with SwissADME highlighted the compounds' permeability across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), high absorption rates and water solubility, emphasizing their potential for therapeutic applications beyond breast cancer. Furthermore, the compounds exhibited promising pharmacokinetic profiles, synthetic accessibility and adherence to Lipinski's rule of five, supporting their candidacy for further development as therapeutic agents.

Algal & cyanobacterial species
documented across Kerala.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH / AMRITA VISHWA VIDYAPEETHAM

Investigating algae for
wastewater bioremediation.

My BSc project explored algal flora across Kerala to identify candidates for future wastewater bioremediation, combining field collection with laboratory investigation.

The project documented 29 algal and cyanobacterial species and compared the growth of three. Chaetomorpha minima grew fastest in the local sewage conditions studied, with a doubling time of about six days.

What the project uncovered

Most wastewater treatment still runs on activated sludge, a roughly hundred-year-old process where aerated microbes strip nutrients from the water, followed by chemical or UV treatment to knock down pathogens. It works, but it is energy-hungry and expensive to run. Algae offer a cheaper, greener alternative: they grow fast, soak up carbon dioxide, and boost oxygen levels in water, which speeds up nutrient removal. Their biomass can also be reused for industry, agriculture, or aquaculture, and almost none of the existing research had looked at species specific to Kerala.

So we went and collected algae growing wild in local wastewater around Amritapuri and other sites in Kerala, and identified 29 algal and cyanobacterial species by habitat and morphology. I picked three for closer study, comparing growth rates and analysing protein and lipid content, and used PCR with rbcL gene primers to start DNA barcoding the strains for confirmation.

Experience that informs
my approach.

I bring a scientist’s questions, a quality professional’s discipline, and a growing toolkit for sustainability.
